English Monarchs: Part 3 - Regnal Lists
Posted on Jun 08, 2002 - 03:37 PM by Bill McCann

These three articles set out to present a complete list of the monarchs that have ruled England since the end of the Roman occupation in the fifth century AD. Before defining the scope of the list, however, it was necessary to wade through the confusion that surrounds the apparently inter-changeable terms England, Britain, Great Britain, and The United Kingdom . This was the subject of the first article. The second article took the form of a brief essay on the constitutional development of the English and British monarchy. In this, the final article, we present a complete list of monarchs from the early days of the Wessex dynasty down to the present Queen. In this, the final article, we present a complete list of monarchs from the early days of the Wessex dynasty down to the present Queen.

The following tables present a complete list of the monarchs who have ruled the geographical entity that is England since the end of the Roman occupation. They begin with the Rulers of Wessex simply because it was this Royal House which eventually went on to form the English kingdom. The list does not imply that any before Alfred can in any way be considered to have ruled the entire nation. Even Alfred's claim may be questioned and the first undoubted King of all England may be safely said to have been Edward the Confessor. These are Regnal lists, i.e. the years given for each monarch are the years between which they reigned.
